WRITING PROMPTS

FOR THE FICTION WRITER:

​

1. "It was a dark and stormy night" is considered the worst way to start a story. Start a story with "It was a dark and stormy night." 

2. You go for a walk and end up someplace that you have never been before. 

3. Your phone rings. You don't recognize the number but answer it anyway. Write about the conversation.

4. Your significant other comes home and says, "let me tell you about my day." 

5. Write a story about an animal. However, you cannot use the lettter "n". 

6. "According to your symptoms," the doctor says, "you've been dead for three days." Write about what you do next.

7. You find something hidden in your spouse's dresser drawer. What did you find, and why is (s)he keeping it hidden? 

8. You have an hour to hide a flash drive before "they" come to your house to search for it. Where would you hide it? 

9. Write a story in which you meet your favorite fictional character.

10. Write a story that uses these three things: a burnt-out light bulb, a donut, and thunderstorm.

FOR THE NON-FICTION WRITER:

​

1. Write about a song or song lyric that has inspired you in some way.

2. Write about a trip that you took and what made it special.

3. Write about a cell phone app that you use on a regular basis and how it makes your life easier.

4. Write about a notable gift that you received. Why did you like it or dislike it?

5. Write about something that you regret.

6. Write about your favorite Halloween costume. Or, write about a Halloween costume that you would love to wear.

7. Write about a favorite pet.

8. Write about a walk that you took.

9. Write about the time you received really good or really bad service at a restaurant.

10. Write about a Christmas present you always wanted but never got.
